How Hypnosis Helps Anxiety
I found hypnosis for anxiety in 2004. I felt like the skies opened up and the heavens were singing – I finally found freedom!
“I have struggled with anxiety for my entire life. I have tried EVERYTHING.” Yes, I have heard that from hundreds of clients over the years, and I have said that myself MANY times!
I have been researching holistic brain-based ways to calm stress and anxiety for over 20 years. I found some relief in different ways and yet, when I found hypnosis, I felt like I had struck gold! My anxiety didn’t just magically disappear, but I learned how tapping into the power of hypnosis can help me learn how to calm anxiety and stress.
“Hypnosis can be used to help you gain control over undesired behaviors or to help you cope better with anxiety or pain. It’s important to know that although you’re more open to suggestion during hypnosis, you don’t lose control over your behavior.” ~Mayo Clinic
Can hypnosis help anxiety?
YES! Hypnosis works for anxiety by helping you tap into the power of your subconscious mind. Hypnosis isn’t the scary man swinging a pocketwatch you may have seen on tv or in the movies. That is all meant for entertainment. The work I do with hypnosis and anxiety is simply about helping you learn how to recognize when you are starting to feel stressed or anxious and then redirect your mind to a calm place. Many hypnotists read “scripts.” I do not. One-size-does-not-fit-all! The key to my success as a hypnotist is that I do not read a script – I am excellent at finding the right ways that work for each individual.
How hypnosis helps anxiety
Hypnosis is simply a focused state of awareness. If you have ever found yourself so engrossed in a movie, book or game and didn’t hear someone calling you, you have experienced hypnosis. Another common occurrence of hypnosis is “highway hypnosis:” when you get to your destination and don’t remember the drive. While you were driving, your conscious mind was off thinking about something else, while your subconscious mind had you driving safely.
Whenever we experience something for the first time, a group of neurons fire off in our brain. The next time we experience the same thing, or something similar, the same group of neurons fire off again and the “neural pathway” in our brain gets deeper and deeper. So, for example, when I was a young girl and heard yelling in our home, it triggered anxiety in me. Years and years later, when I hear someone yelling, it triggers my anxiety. What hypnosis has helped me do is to create a new neural pathway: recognize that I’m being triggered and then immediately do one of my many calming techniques. Hypnosis for anxiety is the most important tool I have in a major stash of tools in my emotional toolbox.
Why does hypnosis help anxiety?
I’ve been practicing hypnosis to help anxiety for almost 20 years. Many, if not most, clients come to me as a “last resort.” “I’ve tried everything!” they say.
The reason hypnosis helps anxiety is that it is getting to the root cause – it is not like a band-aid. That is why I struggled for so many years – I was always looking outside myself for relief from stress and anxiety. I think that because I had struggled for so many years before I found freedom from anxiety helps me to connect with my clients on an even deeper level. I know what it feels like to be trapped in anxious cycles – and I know what it feels like to be able to say “Goodbye Anxiety, Hello Freedom!” (Title of my book, available on Amazon!) I want you to say “If she can overcome anxiety, so can I!”
Is hypnosis safe for anxiety?
Yes! No one has ever gotten “stuck” in hypnosis. Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. When we fall asleep at night, our conscious mind shuts off, but thankfully our subconscious mind continues working all the automatic functions that keep us alive (breathing, heart pumping, etc.) Our same powerful subconscious mind can free us from the
When I use hypnosis to help clients with anxiety, I am teaching them how to tap into the incredible power of their own mind – not relying on something outside themself.
